Description:
This policy ensures that the frequency and extent of restoration procedures are tested. This is important to ensure that restoration procedures are effective and that they can be used to restore data in the event of a disaster.
Rationale:
Restoration procedures are a critical part of the disaster recovery plan. If restoration procedures are not effective, it could make it difficult or impossible to restore data in the event of a disaster. By testing the frequency and extent of restoration procedures, you can ensure that they are effective and that they can be used to restore data.
Impact:
The impact of not testing the frequency and extent of restoration procedures could be significant. If restoration procedures are not effective, it could make it difficult or impossible to restore data in the event of a disaster. This could lead to lost revenue, customer dissatisfaction, and damage to the organization's reputation.
Default Value:
AWS recommends that organizations test the frequency and extent of restoration procedures on a regular basis. This can be done by restoring data from backup media to a test environment and verifying that the data is restorable. The frequency of testing should be based on the criticality of the data and the risk of a disaster.
Pre-requisites:
To implement this policy, you will need to have access to the backup media and the appropriate permissions to restore data from backup media. You will also need to have a test environment where you can restore data from backup media.
Remediation Steps:
The following steps can be used to remediate this policy:
- Identify all of the restoration procedures.
- Create a test plan for the restoration procedures.
- Implement the test plan.
- Document the test plan.
Test Plan:
The following steps can be used to test the remediation steps:
- Verify that the test plan is being followed.
- Verify that the data is restorable from backup media.
Implementation Plan:
The following steps can be used to implement the policy:
- Identify all of the restoration procedures.
- Create a test plan for the restoration procedures.
- Implement the test plan.
- Document the test plan.
AWS CLI Process:
There is no AWS CLI process for testing the frequency and extent of restoration procedures. However, you can use the AWS CLI to list the backup media that you have.
Using AWS GUI:
You can use the AWS Management Console to list the backup media that you have. To do this, go to the "Backup" service and click on the "Backup Media" tab.
Backout Plan:
The following steps can be used to revoke the changes made to implement this policy:
- Delete the test plan.
Note:
- This policy is not intended to replace the need for a comprehensive disaster recovery plan.
- This policy is specific to AWS resources. Other resources, such as on-premises servers, may require different testing procedures.
