**Description**

Ensure Block Storage volumes that hold important data have a recent snapshot or volume backup, taken on a regular schedule, so the data can be restored after accidental deletion, corruption, or ransomware.

**Rationale**

Block Storage volumes are not backed up automatically. If a volume is deleted, corrupted, or encrypted by ransomware, the data is lost without a backup. Regular snapshots or backups make sure data can be restored and support recovery point objectives.

**Impact**

- Volume data can be restored after loss

- Supports recovery objectives

- Snapshots and backups are billed by storage used

**Default Value**

By default, Block Storage volumes have no snapshots or backups.

**Pre-Requisites**

- Permission to manage Block Storage in the Public Cloud project

- A defined backup schedule

**Test Plan**

1. Log in to the OVHcloud Control Panel at [https://www.ovh.com/manager/](https://www.ovh.com/manager/).

2. In the left-hand menu, select Public Cloud and choose your project.

3. In the left-hand menu, under Storage, select Block Storage to list the volumes.

4. Open Volume Snapshot and Volume Backup (under Storage) and confirm each important volume has a recent snapshot or backup within your schedule.

5. If a volume has no recent snapshot or backup, follow the implementation steps.

**Implementation Steps**

1. Log in to the OVHcloud Control Panel at [https://www.ovh.com/manager/](https://www.ovh.com/manager/).

2. In the left-hand menu, select Public Cloud and choose your project.

3. In Block Storage, click the ⋯ button in the volume's row and select Create a backup.

4. Select the volume, choose Volume Snapshot (no need to detach) or Volume Backup (the volume must be detached), enter a name, and click Create backup.

5. Set up a schedule, for example a backup policy or an automation script, so backups are taken regularly.

**Backout Plan**

1. Log in to the OVHcloud Control Panel at [https://www.ovh.com/manager/](https://www.ovh.com/manager/).

2. In the left-hand menu, select Public Cloud and choose your project.

3. Open Volume Snapshot or Volume Backup and delete snapshots or backups created by mistake.
