Description
Ensure Cloud Backup is turned on for every dedicated (M10 and higher) Atlas cluster, so that Atlas takes scheduled snapshots of the cluster's data, which can be restored after accidental deletion, corruption, or a security incident.
Rationale
Without backups, data lost through a mistake, a bad deployment, or ransomware cannot be recovered. Cloud Backup takes regular snapshots automatically and keeps them according to a backup policy, so the cluster can be restored to a recent point in time.
Impact
Cluster data can be restored after loss
Supports recovery and compliance requirements
Backups add storage costs
Default Value
For M10+ clusters, Cloud Backup is controlled by the Turn on Cloud Backup toggle. Flex clusters are always backed up and backups cannot be turned off. A project Backup Compliance Policy, if configured, turns Cloud Backup on for all clusters and prevents turning it off.
Pre-Requisites
Project Owner or Project Cluster Manager role
An M10 or higher cluster
Test Plan
Log in to MongoDB Atlas at https://cloud.mongodb.com.
Select your organization and project from the menus at the top of the page.
In the sidebar, click Clusters, find the cluster, and click Edit Configuration.
Expand the Additional Settings panel.
Check whether Turn on Cloud Backup is On.
Alternatively, use the Atlas Administration API or the Atlas CLI (https://www.mongodb.com/docs/atlas/cli/current/). Run GET /api/atlas/v2/groups/{groupId}/clusters/{clusterName} and check that backupEnabled is true.
If backup is off, follow the implementation steps.
Implementation Steps
Log in to MongoDB Atlas at https://cloud.mongodb.com.
