Description

Ensure production Public Cloud instances have an automated backup schedule, created with the Workflow Management tool or the instance's Create an automatic backup option, with a rotation (for example 7 or 14 days) that meets recovery needs.

Rationale

Without automated backups, an instance can be lost through deletion, corruption, or ransomware with no way to restore it. Manual backups are easily forgotten. An automated workflow takes backups on schedule and keeps a set number, so the instance can always be restored.

Impact

  • Instances can be restored after loss or corruption

  • Backups happen automatically on a schedule

  • Backup storage is billed

Default Value

Automated backups are offered when creating an instance, but they can be turned off, and existing instances may have none.

Pre-Requisites

  • Permission to manage instances in the Public Cloud project

Test Plan

  1. Log in to the OVHcloud Control Panel at https://www.ovh.com/manager/.

  2. In the left-hand menu, select Public Cloud and choose your project.

  3. In the left-hand menu, under Compute, select Workflow Management and check for a backup workflow for each production instance.

  4. If a production instance has no backup workflow, follow the implementation steps.

Implementation Steps

  1. Log in to the OVHcloud Control Panel at https://www.ovh.com/manager/.

  2. In the left-hand menu, select Public Cloud and choose your project.

  3. In Instances, click the ⋯ button to the right of the instance and select Create an automatic backup.

  4. Select Automatic instance backup as the workflow and click Next, then choose the instance, a name, and the schedule (with its rotation), and create the workflow.

  5. Alternatively, run POST /cloud/project/{serviceName}/region/{regionName}/workflow/backup in the API console.

  6. After the first run, check that a backup appears in Instance Backup (under Compute).

Backout Plan

  1. Log in to the OVHcloud Control Panel at https://www.ovh.com/manager/.
